Air Travellers Tip: Miss a flight? Reclaim your taxes

The FT published an interesting article yesterday. Apparently if you miss a flight for whatever reason, even if the ticket is non-refundable, you have a good chance of getting at least your Government taxes back. read the FT.com article in full.
Most airlines do not advertise this fact and pocket the money, but there is however a catch to making a claim; Most airlines will charge you an administrative fee to process your tax refund. Having said that, with the recent increase in Air Passenger Duty (APD) that refund is becoming more worthwhile; especially on a long haul flight.

Remember, if you miss a flight, your first course of action should be to attempt to reschedule your flight. Your success will depend on which airline you bought your ticket from, and will almost definitely be subject to a charge.

Green tax or just an excuse to raise taxes?

Green issues seem to be the hot topic amongst politicians at the moment. The Tories view of taxing our flights is a little more complex than the New Labour policy of just doubling airport tax across the board.
The Tories want to use an air miles system, you could think of it as rationing. Everyone will have a certain allowance of air miles, beyond which the tax increases to make the journey by air less attractive.
Good idea in principal but the air mile allowance which has been banded around seems to only cover European destinations.

Do you agree with this air mile allowance system?

Holidaymaker's go green?

According to a lastminute.com survey, 78% of tourists are willing to pay twice as much flight tax (APD) if the cash was used to offset their journey. The effect your holiday has on the environment is second only to the weather when choosing where you want to go on your vacation.

Do you agree with the findings of this survey?

Do you offset your carbon emissions?

Tour operators group launches legal action against Air Passenger Duty hike

At the beginning of February 2007 the chancellor Gordon Brown gave the air travel industry a blow by increasing the Air Passenger Duty by a factor of 2. This tax now stands at £10 for economy class travel within the EU to £80 for a longer-distance first-class flight.
Budget airlines saw this as a major threat to their business and expressed doubts over whether the environment would see much benefit either.
Let's hope the Federation of Tour Operators (FTO) wins this legal battle, everyone should have the right to fly, not just the rich. Long live budget airlines and cheap holidays abroad!
